Bernice is survived by her husband, Laurel Lee Newby of Summersville, MO; her sons, Leonard and wife Brenda, Hartshorn, MO, and Dennis and wife Cathy, Summersville; four grandchildren, Linny Newby and wife Janie, Summersville, Holly Newby, Hartshorn, and Heather and Heath Newby, Summersville; two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Alexa; three sisters, Betty Smith and husband Howard, Summersville, Norma Thompson and husband Bill, Yuma, AZ, and Rose Ann Rubert and husband Fred, Hawthorn, NV; one brother, Douglas Lewis and wife Linda, Mountain View, MO; her stepfather, Clarence Smith, Mountain View, MO; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was a faithful member of the Valley Center Baptist Church and was active in Vacation Bible School; she taught Sunday School and was also a song leader. She held the clerk position for 25 years.
Bernice worked for the Oregon State Board of Forestry as a cook for two years and as a look-out for two years. She also worked at the hardware Store in Summersville, Young's Cafe and owned a cafe. She worked at Angelica for six years and at Newby's Auction Services.
Bernice loved living on the farm and missed farm life when she and Laurel moved to town in 1990. She loved the livestock and especially enjoyed the birds, ducks and peacocks. Growing flowers and gardening were two things Bernice enjoyed.
Funeral services were held on March 8, 1995 at the Valley Center Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Bridges officiating. Burial was in Valley Center Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home of Summersville, MO.
