He married Helen Bernice Lewis April 11, 1948. They were married 47 years before her death in 1995. They had two sons.
Mr. Newby was in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 in World War II. He served on the U.S.S. Hatfield, spending most of that time in Alaska. He was a member of the Valley Center Baptist Church and ordained as a deacon April 27, 1975.
He worked in the forestry service in Oregon for many years and moved back to the Summersville-Hartshorn area where he owned and operated a farm near Akers. He also worked in the woods, operated a bulldozer for 17 years for Ozark Stone Products and was a stone mason. He clerked for about 25 years for Newby Auction Service. Mr. Newby served on the Summersville City Council and on occasion worked along-side city employees. He loved to work a good team, a good saddle horse and Hereford cattle. He was a hunter and expert marksman. He was a craftsman, building desks, chests and gun cabinets.
He was preceded by his parents and his wife. Surviving are his sons, Leonard Lee of Yukon and Dennis Gene of Summersville; four sisters, Irene Lowrey [Lower] of Florida, Mary Millington and Juanita Stewart of Summersville and Evelyn Tyler of Hartshorn; a friend, Margaret Shockley of Mountain View; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were Aug. 2 at the Valley Center Baptist Church with the Rev. Rick Purcell officiating. Burial was in the Valley Center Cemetery at Hartshorn under the direction of Bradford Funeral Home of Summersville.
