George Washington Newby was born November 16, 1889 at McFall, Mo., in Gentry County.
The son of Samuel D. Newby and Mary Francis Spencer Wortman. He passed away in his home at Hartshorn, Mo., Feb. 4, 1982, at the age of 92 years, two months, and 19 days.

He was united in marriage to Lona Lee Medlock on July 25, 1915, at a Brush Harbor Church at Black Valley camp, northeast of Summersville, Mo. Lena Lee Medlock's great-uncle, Luke Medlock, performed the ceremony.

George Newby is survived by his wife Lona, his children Mary Francis Heiney of Summersville, Mo.; Cleo Irene Lower, Fort Meyers Fla.; Laurel Lee Newby Summersville, Mo.; Juanita Elsiemae Stewart, Edwardsville, Ill.; Evelyn Faye Tyler, Bel Ridge, Mo.
Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four half-brothers, Charles and Lawrence Wortman, John and Nathaniel Newby, two half-sister; Sarah Ann Newby and Sophia Elizabeth Rush, one sister Kate Newby and one grand daughter, Leann Heiney.

At age 12, he worked as a water boy, until he got his own team of horses. He then worked in several lumber camps in Missouri and later bought a farm near the Black Valley community. During World War II, he worked at Granite City, Ill. returning to his newly purchased farm north of Hartshorn, Mo. 1946. He lived there until his death.

He joined, the Black Valley Baptist Church at an early age, and has belonged to Valley Center Baptist Church since it was established. He will be missed by loved ones, family and friends.
