Norma Anderson, 75, Jasper, died Thursday, April 9, 2009 at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, S.D.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m., at Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jasper, with Rev. Eugene Anderson officiating.
Casket bearers will be Brian, Joel, and Greg Stelzer, Nile and Colin Anderson, Carl and Jim Mattheis, and Tom Otto.
Interment will be in the Jasper City Cemetery, Jasper.
Norma Ruth Anderson was born to Martin and Emma (Scheidt) Stelzer on July1, 1933 in Marion, S.D., where she attended country school in District 12 for over three years. When she was ten years old, she moved with her parents to a farm in Highland Township of South Dakota, west of Jasper. There she attended school in District 86. After her graduation from Jasper High School in1951, she attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, S.D. She taught school for two years in District 45 of Minnehaha County, S.D. She also taught for seven years in Moody County, S.D. During this time, she was united in marriage to Wayne "Huck" Anderson on Aug. 2, 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper. Following their marriage they resided in Jasper.
In 1963 Norma became employed as a teacher in the Jasper School District. She continued her education by taking classes at General Beadle College in Madison, S.D, where she received her bachelor's degree in 1967. She also attended classes at Augustana College in Sioux Falls and received her master's degree in 1971. Norma continued teaching in Jasper until her retirement in 1993. After her retirement, she enjoyed substitute teaching. She taught for a total of 39 years.
Her husband preceded her in death on July 8, 2002. Following his death, she continued to live in Jasper.
On Sunday, March 22, she entered Avera McKennan Hospital. While in the hospital she suffered a stroke. On April 2, she was transferred to Dougherty Hospice House.
She was a member of the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church, where she was active in the church circle and the Ladies Aid. She was very proud of the Jasper community and she willingly volunteered her time with community projects. She was a member of the Jasper Quarry Lions Club and the Jasper American Legion Auxiliary. For many years she was a Girl Scout leader. She was involved with Community Friend, she was a past board member of the Hiawatha Manor in Pipestone and she served on the board of Sunrise Village in Jasper. She also served with the Red Cross bloodmobile.
She is survived by her two daughters, Marlette Anderson-Otto and her husband Tom, Perham and Darcee Anderson-Mattheis and her husband Jim, Wenatchee, Wash.; three grandchildren; three brothers, Herbert and Ervin Stelzer, both of Sioux Falls and Arthur Stelzer, Plymouth and one sister, Elsie Larson, Ihlen.
She was preceded in death by her husband; and her brother, Robert Stelzer.
