He was a Minister at Railway Street Presbyterian Church, Lisburn.
A distinguished scholar, he was ordained on the 16th October 1879 and was appointed Professor of Hebrew and Biblical Criticism in Magee College, Londonderry, in 1885, and resigned Lisburn on 17th July 1885.
When he died the Derry Standard of the 15th September 1890 described him as Ďa power for good in the college' where his sincerity, simplicity, genuiness, purity of motive, modesty combined with a rare ability and great attainments impressed all who were acquainted with him'.
The Magee College Bigger Award was originally established in 1877 by the then Professor of Hebrew and Biblical Criticism James Lyle Bigger. He had been appointed to the staff of Magee College, Londonderry, in 1885 and after having served only five years died unexpectedly in 1890.

The Will of James Lyle Bigger late of College-avenue Londonderry Professor of Oriental Languages and Hermeneutics in Magee College Londonderry who died 13 September 1890 at same place was proved at Londonderry by Mary Jane Bigger of College-avenue Londonderry the Widow and the sole Executrix. £2651.
