Sister Philomena of Calvary
Sister Philomena of Calvary (Frances Kelly), 85, died February 18, 2005 at the Carmelite Monastery on Highway 1, Carmel, CA. Sister Philomena was surrounded by her religious sisters praying at her bedside. She had suffered a long illness and her death was a release from many years of pain.
Born in San Francisco, she moved with her parents to Aurora, Illinois, where she attended primary schools. Frances Kelly graduated from East Aurora High School in 1937.
She was the eldest of seven children, helping her mother and father raise the remaining six. Her remaining, living siblings are now married with children of their own, and include sisters Betty Foster of Redmond, Oregon, and Sharon Wagner of Corvallis, Oregon, and brothers William Kelly of Milwaukee, Oregon; Patrick Kelly of Monrovia, California, and Gerald Kelly of Crooked River Ranch, Oregon.
She served with distinction during World War II as LT Frances Kelly, a Navy nurse at the Navy hospital in Berkeley, California.
She entered the monastery in 1949, having been a student at the University of California. In the monastery, Sister Philomena served with distinction as Prioress for several terms and held other responsible offices within the community.
Funeral services were held on February 21, 2005, at 10:00 A.M. at the Monastery. Bishop Sylvester Ryan, D.D. was the main celebrant, and Fr. Gerald D. Coleman, S.S., was the homilist.
