William Bowman (Bill) Hoover, died August 20, 2012, at the Veteran's Hospital in Salem, Virginia, following several years of declining health. He was born Oct. 24, 1921 in Tazewell, Virginia to Samuel P. Hoover and Annie McNeil Hoover.
Bill entered Virginia Tech in 1940 as a member of the class of 1944. He joined the U.S. Army and took part in the D-Day Landing and invasion of Europe including the Battle of the Bulge.
After his Army discharge in 1945, Bill returned to Virginia Tech where he completed his engineering degree. He worked for more than forty years for Hayes, Seay, Mattern and Mattern.
Bill was predeceased by his wife, Billy Gene Grindstaff Hoover and a brother, Charles Randolph Hoover.
He is survived by a niece, Ann K. Hoover and sister-in-law, Kathleen H. Hoover.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at Bandy Cemetery on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22 at Oakey's Roanoke chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Virginia Tech School of Engineering.
