Joseph Grayum “Jo Jo” Steele, 19, of Dunlap, died Friday, March 18, 2005 in an automobile accident in Lincoln County.
Mr. Steele was born April 9, 1985 in Roswell to Joe and Karen Steele. He grew up on the family ranch in Dunlap and was a 2003 graduate of Fort Sumner High School. Steele was a junior at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces at the time of his death.
Mr. Steele was a ham radio operator and enjoyed helping his father on the ranch, working on engines and playing the guitar and mouth harp.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Grayum and Grace Steele, his maternal grandfather Dave Bailey and two cousins, Robert Martin and Ty Calvert Carlyle.
He is survived by his parents; a brother, Chris Steele of Carrizozo; two sisters, Elizabeth Steele of Roswell and Samantha (and husband Kurt) Griego of Fort Sumner; his maternal grandmother, Annie Bailey of Fort Sumner; two nephews, Colby and James Griego; aunts and uncles, Susanne Eldridge and David and Leslie Bailey of Fort Sumner and Betty and Charlie Martin of Dunlap; and seven cousins.
The Steele family will greet visitors from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Chavez Funeral Home.
At 2 p.m., the procession will leave to the family ranch and Ingleville Cemetery. Anna Teeter will officiate services.
Pallbearers will be Scott Pennington, Greg Pennington, Bryce Mansell, Danny Milliron, Jerry Cones, Homero Madrid and Thane Peterson. Honorary pallbearers will include John Wylie and friends.
Arrangements are by Chavez Funeral Home of Fort Sumner.
