Lance Bombadier John Abley
John was born in Portobello, Willenhall in the Autumn of 1893, the son of John ABLEY, a Coal Miner, and Ann ABLEY nee BEVAN. He was the oldest child in a family of 9. He worked as a stamper in the Lock trade, and then as a Miner, before he joined up, and was living in Walsall with his family. He was not married.

John joined the army soon after the declaration of War in August 1914. He arrived in Egypt in April 1915, and was then posted on to Gallipoli in Turkey. He served with the 10th Battery of the Royal Field Artillery, and was promoted to Acting Bombadier.

John was shot by a sniper whilst working with colleagues to strengthen the position of their 12-pounder gun, and died of his wounds in the Military Field Hospital about an hour later. He was just 22.

Lance Bombadier John ABLEY was buried in Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Krithia, in Grave No. XI. B. 12. He was awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the British Victory Medal posthumously.
