Services for Joseph Flanders Avery, age 86 of Dublin, who passed away Friday, March 12, 2010, will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 14, 2010 in the chapel of Townsend Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Steve Patton and Dr. Joel Dent will officiate. Burial will follow in the Poplar Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery, Adrian, Georgia, with Rev. Jay Williams officiating.. Mr. Avery was born and grew up in the Orianna Community of Laurens County. He was the youngest son of Will F. and Annie Flanders Avery. He was a retired farmer. He retired from the Georgia Department of Labor after 24.5 years of service. He was a very active member of Poplar Springs United Methodist Church in Adrian and Pine Forest United Methodist Church. He was past president of the Dublin Civitans and the Adrian Lions Club. He was a youth group leader for Boy Scouts, Jr. Civitans and Methodist Youth Fellowship and he was a Sunday School teacher. He was a very active participant in the community. Mr. Avery was preceded in death by his brothers, Estus Avery, George Avery, Austin Avery; sisters Bernice Avery Cox, Geneva Avery Seals and a son, Charles William Avery. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Christine Williams Avery of Dublin, daughter, Nancy Avery of St. Simons Island, son, Carl Avery and wife Luann, of Dublin, grandchildren, Chad (Natalie) Avery of St. Simons Island, Christi Ruffo of Silver Springs, Maryland, Amanda Avery (Sam) Cooper of Norcross, Jessica Avery of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, great-granddaughter, Addison Avery of St. Simons Island. Jimmy Horton, Brandon Thomas, Wallace Pullins, Gene Stewart, Grayson Watson and Ricky Avery will serve as pallbearers. Honorary escort will include the Pine Forest United Methodist Church Men's Bible Class, Dee Carden, John Clem, co workers from the Georgia Department of Labor, Buddy Bloodworth and Shirley Peterson. The family will receive friends at Townsend Brothers Funeral Home Sunday March 14, 2010 from 1:00 PM until the funeral hour. Memorial contributions may be made to the Poplar Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund or the General Fund. Townsend Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
