Partriarch of the Bernhardt families of North Carolina. Husband of Ann (Maria) Elizabeth Behringer.
Johann Christian Bernhardt, along with his two brothers, Henry and David, left the Upper Palatinate of the Rhine due to religious persecution and the effects of years of war within the region. They immigrated by way of Switzerland into America, landing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Henry arrived in 1741, and John Christian arrived aboard the ship "Edinburg" from Rotterdam on September 15, 1749.
While in Pennsylvania, Johann Christian met and married Mary Elizabeth Behringer (Barringer) in Philadelphia in 1750. John and his wife shortly thereafter joined the early migration of other Swiss and German emigrants from Pennsylvania to North Carolina in the middle 1700's, settling in what is now Cabarrus County in 1752. He made his home along Cold Water Creek where he purchased 198 acres on February 10, 1765 in Mecklenburg, now Cabarrus County. He was one of the founding members of the Cold Water Reform Church. His and Elizabeth's names appear on the church membership list in 1766.
