The son of Cale & Amelia [unconfirmed] Alexander, in 1850, he live in Greencastle, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, but is not found in the 1860 census. He was a cooper by trade and stood 5' 4" tall with black hair, black eyes, and black complexion.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Chambersburg September 2, 1863, assigned to Co. I, 127th U.S. Colored Troops, and honorably discharged October 20, 1865, discharged at Brazos, Texas, owing for lost accouterments: $.36 for great coat straps, $.56 for cap pouch and pick; $.56 for a bayonet scabbard, and $.46 for waist belt and plate.
In 1870, he lived in Antrim Township, Franklin County, but by 1890, resided in Carlisle. He was able to sign his name.
