James Anderson Berry, Jr, age 80, has passed away in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center's Hospice Care Center, following a stroke.

Jim was born December 16, 1934, in Union, South Carolina, and lived there most of his life, except for time while at College and in Graduate School, and while in the military and during part of his business career when he lived in Atlanta.

Jim was an honor graduate of Union High School and attended Clemson University where he studied architecture before graduating from Wofford College in Spartanburg with a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. After carrying on a Berry family military tradition by serving as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army and as a pilot, with postings overseas in Japan, he studied for a Master's Degree in Architecture at North Carolina State University. He then moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where he utilized his architectural, construction and drawing skills, working as a realtor first with Sharp Boylston Company and then later on his own and with his brother, Robin Berry.

As his parents grew older, he returned to Union to live with and care for them during their later years until their own passing away. Jim was a multi-valent and multi-talented individual and was the leader and oldest child of a clan of four siblings. He was an accomplished pianist who played by ear; a great dancer;, a master photographer who captured on film many of the scenes around Union County from the days of yore; a sketch artist; an ornithologist who could spot a small bird, invisible to the eyes of others, sitting in a faraway tree, call out the name of the bird, and then draw a watercolor of it from memory; a lover of the outdoors, he worked to stay in shape through hiking at the family farm, Meadowoods, weightlifting and aerobic exercises, carryovers from his days as a Union High School cheerleader.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, James Anderson Berry, Sr., his mother, Carrie Aiken Dupre Berry both of Union, and a younger brother Robin Reid Berry of Atlanta.

He is survived by his sister, Barbara Capers Elliott Berry Peterson and her husband, Chandler Peterson of Ailey, Georgia, and Scottsdale, Arizona; his brother, Peter Dupre Berry and his wife, Harriett; sister-in-law Sandra McLees Berry of Atlanta; nephews and nieces , James Chandler Peterson, Jr. and Thaxton Thrasher Peterson (Sara) of Scottsdale, Arizona; Daniel Dupre Berry (Donna) of Spartanburg; David Elliott Berry of Lexington, South Carolina, and Katherine McNair Berry of Atlanta; Bonnie Berry Kavali and husband Nicholas John Kavali of Alpharetta; Kathryn Anderson "Katy" Berry of Atlanta; Brandon Wood Berry of Atlanta; James Alston Berry and Julia Holliday Berry of Atlanta. Also surviving are numerous great nieces and great nephews, including Sydney Churchill Peterson, Thaxton Cash Peterson and Sawyer Channing Peterson of Scottsdale, Arizona; twins, John Hamrick and Caroline Dupre Berry of Spartanburg; Sydney Berry Buckley and Hayley McLees Buckley; John Nicholas (Jack) Cavali and Colt Anderson Kavali all of Atlanta; Alston Reid Berry and Lucille Elizabeth Berry (Lucy), also of Atlanta.

A memorial service will be held at Grace United Methodist Church in Union on Saturday, April 4 at 2:00 PM, with Reverend David Bauknight presiding. A reception will follow in the Church Fellowship Hall for family and friends to mingle and reunite. Remains will be interred in the Church cemetery adjacent to his parents.
