The son of William Cook and Annie Louise (Wilcox) Almy, Herbert joined the Alaskan gold rush at age 17 yrs. After returning to Tivereton and his wife's death, he became a recluse. He was found guilty on Oct. 10, 1938 of the non-fatal shooting of Herbert Cavaca who owed him back rent and died the next spring.
