Irving was the son of Milton L. and Beatrice Barnes. He died at the age of 79 on January 18, 2007 at his home in Summerland Key, Florida. He was born in Burlington, Vermont and retired in Florida in 1972 with his wife, Nadine, after serving 27 years in the US Navy. He was a lifelong member of the D.A.V. and will be greatly missed. Popsy is survived by two sons, David N. (Carol) Barnes and Michael S. (Debbie) Barnes. He dearly loved his grandchildren: Michele, Michael Jr, Jason, James and Wendy as well as his six great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Elaine Bonnette and a brother, Stephen Barnes.
