Inda "Ruth" Spangler Hodnett, 82, of 238 Sandy River Road, Axton, died Friday, Nov. 9, 2001, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
She was born Feb. 6, 1919, in Carroll County, to the late Claude Calvin Spangler and the late Amanda Webb Spangler.
Also preceding her in death were a son, Donald Cox; five sisters, Hazel Robertson, Elsie Bowman, Mary Spence, Recie Nester and Mattie Sutphin; and two brothers, Don Spangler and Marvin Spangler.
She retired from the housekeeping department at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County, receiving a five-year service award. She belonged to Good Home Primitive Baptist Church in Axton.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Kay Jefferson Howell of the home; one son, Howard Lester Cox of Ormond Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Annie Sutphin of Dublin, Irene Nester of Stuart and Clara Sutphin of Laurel Fork; two half sisters, Marie Branscome and Vivian Gravely, both of Hillsville; three brothers, Arnold Spangler and Garland Spangler, both of Laurel Fork, and J.C. Mabry of Bassett; half brothers, S.D. Spangler of Bassett and James "Cooley" Spangler of Stuart; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the C.B. Webb family cemetery in Floyd County. Elder Kenneth Bowles will officiate.The family will receive friends at Norris Funeral Services in Martinsville from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today and other times at the home, Sandy River Road, Axton.Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1079 Spruce St., Martinsville, Va. 24112.Norris Funeral Services and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
