Russell Leslie Angwin passed away on Feb. 8, 2011, after a long battle with heart disease and diabetes.
Russ was born June 10, 1920 in Penzance, Cornwall, England, the second son of Andrew and Adelaid (Rogers) Angwin. The family moved to America when Russ was 2 years old, settling in Akron, Ohio, where he grew up.
At the start of WWII, the young soldier met Wilma Baldwin at the train station in Billings while on his way to Ft. Lewis, Wash. They were married a year later, in 1943. He served in the Army during WWII in the Philippines and New Guinea. After the war, he returned to Billings, where he and Wilma worked and raised their family.
He was a talented mechanic who worked for Archie Cochran Motors for 31 years. He also had a continual collection of cars to work on at home. He could fix anything.
Besides loving professional car races, he enjoyed woodworking, leather tooling, and working on electronic equipment. The family frequently went camping, and vacationed around the country, stopping to visit family in Akron. He also enjoyed fishing from their boat. On two occasions, Russ and Wilma traveled to England and Europe to visit their daughter Sheri and her family. They also square danced with three clubs for many years. Russ took great delight in being with his numerous friends.
Russ was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Andrew; and Wilma, his wife of 67 years. He is survived by his three children, Russell Wayne (Judy) of Billings, Sheri Matz (Roger) of Evergreen, Colo., Dianne Angwin of Fort Worth, Texas; his brother, Doug (Sandi) Angwin and sister Barbara Baker, both of Florida; five grandchildren, Chris Angwin, Eric Angwin, Jason Angwin, all of Billings, Amanda Matz, Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Molly Nixon, Billings; and extended family.
Cremation has taken place at Cremation & Funeral Gallery. There will be a small family gathering for interment of ashes at a later date. The family wishes to thank the staff at Sweetwater Retirement Home, and the special people of Rocky Mountain Hospice who kindly took care of Russ in his final months.
