James McGrath was a 35-year-old farmer when he enlisted as a private at Benicia Barracks, California, October 30, 1864, and was mustered into Company F, 6th California Infantry, November 5. Private McGrath drowned January 26, 1865, and was buried in the Benicia Barracks post cemetery. (Orton, 748, 878)

The funeral of Private James McGrath will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2˝ O’clock p.m. A detail of one corporal and eight men from Company B, 6th Infantry, C.V., will form the funeral escort. Company F will attend the funeral, with side arms, as well as those from the other companies who may wish to attend.
