Frank Bombard, native of Au Sable Forks, New York, died at 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon, September 29, 1957, at Sunmount Veterans Hospital, Tupper Lake, New York, after a lengthy illness, in his 56th year.
Mr. Bombard was taken to Sunmount Thursday, September 26th, after having suffered a stroke at his home in Lake Placid, New York. He seemed to be showing improvement at the hospital but suffered a relapse. Death was attributed to a heart condition.
Born at Au Sable Forks June 23, 1901, he was the son of the late Alfred and Media (Dennett) Bombard. He lived there until he was 21 when he went to Lake Placid, where he has since resided. He went into the building and construction business, working for various contractors in the Adirondacks. For the past 12 years he operated a grocery store and filllng station which he purchased from Mrs. Mae Wilkins of that place.
Before that he was a ski instructor and known throughout the North Woods as an expert skier. He was also an ardent sportsman, passing many happy hours at his camp north of Lake Placid during the fall hunting season and in the surrounding woods where he liked to fish in the streams.
A veteran of World War II, he served two years in the U. S. Army. He was serving on the island of New Caledonia in the South Pacific when he suffered a severe knee injury as a result of which he was given a disability discharge. He returned to Lake Placid following his separation from the service.
He was married to Mrs. Leah Damp of Lake Placid about 12 years previous. She preceded him in death. Although Mr. Bombard lived at Lake Placid most of his life, he was a frequent visitor to Au Sable Forks where he was well known.
He was a member of Lake Placid Council, Knights of Columbus, for many years.
Survivors were his two stepsons, Robert Damp of Glens Falls, New York, and Edward Damp of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, two brothers, Fred and Halsey Bombard of Au Sable Forks, five sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Alford and Mrs. Adrian Garso of Schenectady, New York, Mrs. James Hodges of Au Sable Forks, Mrs. George Gonyo of Chazy, New York, and Mrs. George Bombard of Au Sable Forks, and by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning, October 2, 1957, at St. Agnes Church, Lake Placid, and burial was in the family plot in the church cemetery.
