of Grayslake
The visitation for Richard D. Best, 83, will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, March 1, at Strang Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 410 E. Belvidere Road, Grayslake. The funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 2, at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 31 Park Ave., Grayslake. Interment will be in East Fox Lake Cemetery in Lake Villa. Born March 22, 1927, in Chicago, to James and Marie Best, he passed away Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at home. He graduated from Crane Tech High School and then enlisted in the Army serving in Germany from 1944 to 1946 as a staff sergeant. Upon his discharge he entered University of Illinois, Urbana, and graduated from the college of business with a degree in marketing. On June 12, 1948, he and Elizabeth Hook married at St. Lawrence Church in Libertyville. Richard was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Grayslake, where he was involved with the registry, junior warden, and choir. He started a boys choir at Allendale using his talents in music and choral. Richard worked at Fashion Hill and was a buyer at Montgomery Ward, Chicago, before owning Hook & Company Men's Clothing Grayslake for 20 years. He belonged to the historical society, was a former board member for Midwest Bank, and was past president of the Chamber of Commerce. He pursued commercial real estate as R.D. Best, Inc. in the Lake County Area and later associated with Tri State Realty, also belonging to officer in several professional real estate associations. He was a member and officer of American Legion Post for 50 years both in Urbana and Grayslake #659. He was a past master of the Grayslake Masonic Lodge and a member of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed tennis, gardening, fishing, taking the family on extended camping and canoeing trips including the border lakes, Alaska and western states. He enjoyed his family the Illini and Bears sports, as well as active years with the Boy Scouts. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elizabeth; his son, Charles (Stephanie) Best; his daughter, Barbara (Michael) Bruno; granddaughters, Shira and Rebekha; six great-grandchildren; and a special daughter, Donna Palivos, and her children, Danielle and Mycah, and their children.
