Obituary published in The Dalles Chronicle; May 20, 2011

Adkisson, Merril M. 86 Nov. 14, 1924 May 18, 2011 Merril graduated from Dufur High School, attended Oregon State College, served in the U.S. Air Corps as a bomber pilot and returned to the family farm after World War II. He married Thelma when he returned and they celebrated 65 years of marriage this year. He retired from farming (or "quit," as he said) 25 years ago when Merril and Thelma moved to downtown Portland and started the next phase of their life together. Merril is survived by his wife, "Blondie"; daughter, Pam Clausen and her husband, Carleton; son, Doug Adkisson and his wife, Cathy; grandchildren, Mathew Clausen and his wife, Holly, Michael Clausen and his fianc‚e, Charcie Clock, Kelsey Adkisson with Patrick Mirick, Lindsey Adkisson, Hailey Adkisson, Kelsey Couch, and Kristen Couch; and, always a part of the family, Craig "Twig" Ziegler and his wife, Barbara. Merril was an innovative farmer, always pushing to try new things. He believed in being more efficient both with machinery as well as with farming techniques. Most of his ideas worked, some didn't. But that never stopped the ideas from coming forward. He wanted to diversify from the farm and taught himself about the stock market, something that became quite significant in his and Thelma's life. He read constantly throughout his life from all types of publications. This flowed into many long discussions with those who knew him on a whole range of topics. Merril was a devoted husband and a great dad and grandpa. But, most of all, he was a person that cared about many people. He and Blondie have reached out to people in any number of ways. From simply opening their apartment up as a "stop-over point," to volunteering and supporting non-profit organizations, to simply befriending individuals, particularly young adults, and making them feel part of the extended family. He and Blondie traveled the U.S., then the world. He said, "It is important to see how other people live so you can better understand what is happening." Their adventures included essentially every continent in the world. Anyone who knew him will be able to tell stories that celebrate his character. He was a unique individual, strong-willed in a way, but always willing to help. He loved conversation and always included a few of his many "Merrilisms." He provided great counsel to many and he will be sorely missed. But . as J. Paul Getty said (according to Merril) . "The world changes so you had better learn to adapt with it." In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to OMSI, 1945 S.E. Water Ave., Portland, OR 97214.
