Otho Thompson Beall, educator, was born in Washington D.C., Feb. 6, 1908, son of Otho Thompson and Sophie (Klager) Beall. He received his preliminary education at public schools in his native city and was graduated A.B. at Williams College in 1930, M.A. at the University of Minnesota in 1933, and Ph.D. in American civilization at the University of Pennsylvania in 1952. He began his career as managers of the Newspaper Feature Syndicate, Washington, D.C., from 1933 to 1946. He later became instructor of American Studies at the University of Maryland and worked there until his retirement in 1977. Beall specialized in the colonial period of American history, the history of American science, and medical history. His church was St. Barnabas (Episcopal), Leeland, Maryland, which he served as a vestryman, and in politics he was a Democrat. In addition to his great interest in the history and traditions of southern Maryland, he enjoyed gardening, farming, antique collecting, and reading. He was married in Alexandria, Virginia, June 5, 1948, to Martha Elizabeth, daughter of Edward John, Jr., and Mariam Agnew (Jones) Byers. Together they had three children: Claiborne Brooke, Clarissa Minthorne, and Miranda Pope, who married Michael Perdue Knowles. Otho T. Beall died in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, October 8, 1977.
