Born to John Green Alexander (1810-1897) & Risana Ventres Alexander (1813-1885), both of Tennessee. Married Martha Renfro (1847-1903) on Aug. 4, 1864, in Lancaster, Garrard County, KY.
James enlisted for Confederate service in 1862 and served in the 33rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry, Company A, CSA, and was released as a prisoner of war on May 12, 1865. After the war, he was a farmer in Milam County, TX.
Twelve children, 9 living in 1900: Elizabeth Alexander Adams Henington Strickland (1866-1929), Elbert B. Alexander (1869-1950), William Thomas Alexander (1870-1932), Harry Burnham Alexander (1872-1937), Mary Eliza Alexander Dodd (1874-1898), Canady Carl Alexander (4/2/1876-11/11/1900; grave unknown in Milam County), Jennie Lee Alexander Conner (1879-1959), Nellie Ann Alexander Dodd (1881-1912), Lula Mae Alexander Conner (1883-1966) & Martha Angelina Alexander Donaldson Huseman (1886-1966).
James' death certificate states birth as 1836, but most censuses, including the 1900, state his birth as 1840.
