SPRINGFIELD - Leslie G. Aikman, 93, of Springfield, formerly of Mattoon, died at 2:25 p.m. Monday (Oct. 29, 2001) at Memorial Medical Center.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church, Springfield, with the Rev. Richard Irwin officiating. Military honors will be performed. Burial will be 11 a.m. Friday at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation
will be 3 to 7 p.m. today at the Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home, Springfield, and one hour prior to the service at the church.
He was born March 22, 1908, in Madison County, the son of George E. and Wilmina Aikman. He married Germaine "Gerry" Halle; she died in 1987.
Survivors include one daughter, Linda Aikman Gannon of New Buffalo, Mich.; one brother, A.L. Aikman of Carbondale; one sister, Helen Boyd of Barrington; and companion Molly Gray.
He was also preceded in death by one brother and one sister.
Mr. Aikman was a Navy veteran of World War II. He worked as a distributor of Curtis Publications, a field representative and Area Executive Director for the American Cancer Society and retired in 1973, but continued to work as a consultant to Cancer Prevention Studies. He was a member of the First Christian Church, the American Legion, Elks Lodge 158 and an honorary member of the Illinois Society of Association Executives. He was also a member of the Springfield Art Association, POLKA of America and a member of the Foundation of Eastern Illinois University.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church or the American Cancer Society, both of Springfield.
