FRANK APPLEGATE COMMITS SUICIDE

Plunges Into Spring Head First After Taking Poison and Slashing Throat With Razor.

FEAR OF INSANITY PROMPTED ACT

C.F. Applegate, a well known farmer of Finley township, ended his life Sunday morning at his home five miles southwest of Scottsburg.

He took poison and it not acting quickly enough he then slashed his throat with a razor, making two gaping wounds, and not dying as soon as he thought he should, jumped in a spring head first and drowned. He had evidently contemplated the act as he gave his cousin, Ed Applegate, $981 a few days before, saying, "Keep this for me. If I die it will pay my funeral expenses and if I have to go to Cragmont, it will pay my expenses there." His wife was not at home as she has been living on a farm inherited from her father, in Washington county, and Frank and his son lived together on the farm. The son missed his father and on looking around to see where he was saw blood on the ground, then found the razor and later found his father in the spring which was made of a large two foot sewer, sunk in the ground, where he had plunged in head first.

The son called a neighbor, who helped remove the body to the house, and Coroner Newel Stewart was notified and after making a survey of the premises brought the body to the undertaking rooms to prepare it for burial.

The deceased is survived by his widow and three sons, one at Cragmont, one in Montana and one at home.

Frank was a hardworking man, absolutely honest, very industrious, and quite thrifty, and had considerable means. Just why he killed himself can be solved only on one theory, he feared insanity and did not want to go to an asylum for the insane. He was 60 years of age, the son of George Applegate and wife, both deceased.
