George Robert Banta, 74, of Columbia City, formerly of Canaan, died Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, in an accident in Columbia City.
He was born Aug. 16, 1937, on Ryker's Ridge, the son of George B. and Freda L. Stephan Banta. He was raised on Ryker's Ridge and his family later moved to Canaan. He graduated in 1955 from Central High School. He served in the Army Reserves. He worked at Rexnord Corp. in Madison and transferred with the company to other plants over the course of 20 years. He retired in 2000 after working with ITT for 18 years as the information technology manager. He was a longtime member of Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church near Canaan. He had enjoyed wintering in Texas for the past several years and was looking forward to the trip this year. He was a golfer and enjoyed fishing and devoting time to his son, his grandchildren and the rest of his family.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn A. Riley Banta; one son, George Alan Banta of Columbia City; two sisters, Carolyn Copeland of Canaan and Donna Prather of Doe Valley, Ky.; one grandson; one granddaughter; two nephews; one niece; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, who died Oct. 19, 1990, and his mother, who died Aug. 8, 1996.
The funeral was at Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church, 4413 East County Road 925-N, near Canaan. Burial was in Canaan Cemetery. Military honors were conducted graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.
