Jonah,of Rangeley, passed on at Maine Medical Center.
He was born in Mahanoy City, Pa. a son of George E. and Mary A. (Leiby) Shinton. He graduated from Mahanoy City High School in June 1938. He worked around the coal mines until 1942. He moved to Philadelphia and worked a few years before enlisting in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Europe and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He married Ella L. Gaubatz in 1945. He returned to the United States and worked for the F.J. Stokes Co. in Philadelphia for more than 30 years.
He retired as a machine shop foreman in 1983. After having a vacation home on Quimby Pond in Rangeley, he and Ella had their present home built.
He was an associate member of the Rangeley Congregational Church, a member of Kemankeag Lodge 213 AF&AM and American Legion Post 120 in Rangeley, also a member of the Oquossoc Guides and Sportsmen Association.
He is survived by one son, Frank and his wife, Deborah; two adult grandsons; two great-grandsons; and one brother, George of New Jersey.
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Ella June 6, 2000; also one brother; and one sister.
