SULLIGENT, Ala. - Betty Card Bethune, 73, died Sunday, May 2, 2004, in Tupelo. She was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Tomnolen in Webster County to the late Ben and Mattie Swindle Card. She attended the New Beginnings Church in the Crews community. She worked as a seamstress at TIL in Aberdeen for several years.
Services will be at 10 a.m. at the Otts Funeral Home Chapel with graveside services at 2 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Cemetery near Ackerman with Bro. William Kirkman officiating. Otts Funeral Home of Sulligent is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband, A.C. Merchant of Sulligent; one son, Bruce Smith of Amory; four daughters, Birttie Carter and Linda Thompson, both of Keystone Heights, Fla., Peggy (Art) Lara of Belvedere, Ill., and Brenda (Ray) Rabbitt of Jacksonville, Fla.; two stepsons, Robert Merchant of Oakland, Calif., and Tony Merchant of Sulligent, Ala.; one stepdaughter, Becky Jones of Covington, Tenn.; one brother, Haven Card of Clarksdale; one sister, Alice Taylor of Tomnolen; 22 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Mattie Swindle Card; one son, Wilburn Smith; two sisters; and four brothers.
