Larry L. Stokes

A resident of Port Allen, he died Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at Ochsner Medical Center. He was 70 and a native of Glenmora. Larry retired from Dow Chemical in 1996 as a maintenance/construction supervisor and had been employed with the West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office Work Release Program at the time of his death. Visiting at Sharon Baptist Church, Port Allen, on Sunday, Jan. 17, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Visiting resumes at the church on Monday, Jan. 18, from 8:30 a.m. until religious service at 11 a.m. conducted by Brother Shawn Ostoj and the Rev. Jason Lee. Interment in the church cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Veta Winegeart Stokes, with whom he celebrated his 48th wedding anniversary on Jan. 13, 2010; a "daughter-in-law," Nicole; son, Ronnie Stokes; two sisters, Doris Mullins and Gayle Lee and husband Gary; three grandchildren, Danny "Man" Stokes, Adrienne "His Punkin" Stokes, and Blaine "Tater" Stokes; a great-grandchild, Riley "Little Bit" Stokes; expected great-grandchild, Ryan Lee Stokes; and numerous nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Kerry LeBlanc, Donnie Rice, Gary Beach, Larry Wright, Coby Lee, Shawn Lala, Terry Swanson and Toy Boudreaux. Honorary pallbearers are Pat DeJean, Terry Wiley, Bobby Gibson, Joey Giguere, Jewel Cazes, the men of the West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office and the Prime Timers of Sharon Baptist Church. Preceded in death by his parents, Webb and Juel Laird Stokes; a son, Reggie Stokes; two brothers, Cliff Stokes and Levy "Scoot" Stokes; and a brother-in-law, Wallace Mullins. Larry enjoyed all sports, whether it was spending time at baseball fields, discussing an LSU football game with his boys or pulling for the underdog in a Super Bowl game. No one has ever loved his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren more than Larry. Larry took pride in his job and dedicated his life to his family and Our Lord Jesus Christ. Larry was a faithful member of his church and loved worshipping with his church family. Our family would like to thank Dr. Mary Stringfellow, Dr. Claude Tellis, our Ochsner Medical Center 2nd floor nurse, Nicole and MICU nurses Lana, David and Spencer for their support and care during the last week. Special thanks also to our Sharon Baptist Church family and Brother Shawn Ostoj for their never-ending love and prayers and our friends at Reliable and West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.
