Frances Bessie Haney, 79, died Wednesday at her home in Seminole. Mrs. Haney was born February 18, 1918 to Evan Jim and Germaine Phillips Jim in Atoka. She was a full-blood Mississippi-Choctaw of the Bear Clan.

She moved to Seminole in 1946 from Bentley. She married Vernon Haney February 21, 1949 at the Hitchitee Methodist Church in Seminole. She was a homemaker.

Haney was self-taught and could speak fluent Choctaw, Seminole and English languages. Her hobbies were quilting, gardening and crossword puzzles.

She was a member of Hitchitee Methodist Church and United Indian Methodist Conference. She taught Sunday School classes and loved gospel singing. She served as church pianist for many years.

She is survived by four sons, Aaron Dixon of Okemah, Evan, David and Joseph Haney of Seminole and one daughter, Eomi Harjo of Okmulgee. She is also survived by one brother, Charles Simpson of McAlester and one sister, Pearl Reese of Kiowa, sixteen grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Casket bearers are David, Evan, Joseph, Daniel and Sandy Haney and Victor Harjo. Honorary bearers are Charles W. Harjo, Norman Haney, Sr., Norman Haney, Jr., Michael Haney, Willie and Emmitt Jim and Joe Perkins.

A wake service is set for 6:00 p.m. Friday night at the church. She will be moved to her home Thursday morning and transferred to the church on Friday morning.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Hitchitee Methodist Church. Mike Harjo and Don Jones will officiate. Burial will take place at Hitchitee Church cemetery in Seminole under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
