Vinnie P. Candy was born on March 24, 1932 in Pigeon, OK the daughter of Steve Poor and Mae Cora Evaline (Parker) Poor. She attended school in the Pigeon Community, near present day Qualls. In the early 1950's, she was swept off her feet by the man who rode his horse into the school building just to get her attention. Andrew Phillips asked her to marry him . This union was blessed with three daughters, Brenda, Janey, and Sue Ann. The family lived in the Tulsa area until around 1970, when they decided to return to the Tahlequah area. Vinnie was a DHS provider. When she wasn't working, Vinnie loved to spend a day at the fishing hole with her husband and children. She was bright and very funny, with a witty sense of humor. She was talented in the kitchen and her family remembers the best chicken and dumplings, biscuits and her fried raisin pies as a special treat. In 1986, her beloved, Andrew passed from this life. Vinnie was blessed with her second husband in 1990 and married George Candy. They enjoyed each others company until George passed in 1996. Vinnie was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She was happy to attend any baseball game where her grandchildren were playing. For a little quiet time there was working puzzles and watching "Wheel Of Fortune". The best memory of Vinnie, or "Memaw" as her grandchildren knew her, was she had a way of making life unusual and exciting Every day events became adventures whenever Vinnie was involved. She lived her life as a friend to all she encountered. Her smile was something to warm your heart and bring a smile to your face in return. A Baptist by faith, she was a member of Southside Baptist Church. She served her Lord and Savior with gladness. Vinnie was called to her Heavenly home on September 27, 2010 in Tahlequah, OK with her family by her side. She was seventy eight years old. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her. Vinnie was preceded in death by her parents, loving sisters, Mallie Raincrow, Opal Candy, Fannie Vick, Annie Phillips, and Edith Fields. Her seven brothers included Nelson Poor, Clarence Poor, Willard Poor, Linard Poor, Jim Poor, Jack Poor, and Cecil Poor, as well as her her sons and daughter, Andy, Wiley and Alice, and her husband Andrew Phillips and her second husband George Candy.She has joined her grandson Justin Phillips and one son-in-law, Jerry Lee. Those left behind to cherish her memory include three devoted daughters, Brenda Phillips, Janey Lee, and Sue Ann and her husband Mike Maxey all of Park Hill, OK. Vinnie leaves one brother, Duckett Poor and wife Louise of Park Hill along with her daughters-in-law, Marie Kelley and Donna McIntosh all of Tahlequah as well as sister-in-law, Ruby Poor of Sallisaw. Vinnie's legacy lives on in her nine grandchildren, Kevin Phillips, Tracy Thompson, Matt Thompson and wife Andrea, Shannon Coleman and husband Roy, Sarah Phillips and fiancé Clint Johnson, Marcy Polson and husband Chris, Lacie Dale and husband Zach, Blake Maxey and Logan Maxey. She is survived by six great grandchildren who will never forget their Granny, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends and loved ones. Services for Vinnie Pearl Phillips Candy were held on Friday, Oct. 1, 2010 at the Reed-Culver Chapel in Tahlequah. Interment followed at the Phillips Cemetery at Park Hill. All under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home in Tahlequah.
