|Bartholomew "Barth" Ballard|
|Death: ||Oct. 10, 1877|
Most likely the son of Thomas Ballard (1783-1829) and Sarah Katy Ramsey (1783-1862), and an older brother of Abner Harrold Ballard (1819-1901) and Byron D. Ballard (1822-1893), Barth was first married in 1829, in Hendricks Co., Indiana, to Polly Osborn; he was next married in Jackson Co., Iowa, in June 1850 to Mary Ann German; the 1850 federal census includes 6 children aged 5-20. The 1850 agricultural census details his extensive farm holdings, but when he next appears -- in the 1860 census for San Jose, Santa Clara Co., CA., near Abner & Byron -- he was widowed and a farm laborer, with only one of his previous children (actually most likely an adopted nephew) then living with him. He was again listed as a farmer, however, in 1875 & 1877 voter registrars of Tulare County (residing in Tipton). Barth died at Sacramento County Hospital of "general debility" under the care of Dr. White.
