Edward Courtney Boyle
Birth: Mar. 23, 1883
Death: Dec. 16, 1967

World War I Victoria Cross War Medal Recipient. He served as a Royal Navy Lieutenant Commander, in command of the submarine HMS E-14. At the Sea of Marmara, Turkey, April 27, 1915, Lieutenant Commander Boyle dived his vessel under the enemy minefields. In spite of great navigational difficulties from strong currents and the presence of hostile patrols waiting to attack, he continued, during the next two weeks, to operate in the narrow waters of the straits and succeeded in sinking two Turkish gunboats and one military transport. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross War Medal and later achieved the rank of Rear Admiral. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
