Edward James Muggeridge, motion picture pioneer, who later changed his name to Edweard Muybridge. Born in Kingston Upon Thames, he did most of his work in California. He studied and recorded the movement of animals and humans, using a sequence of cameras to catch the motion, and showing the results on machines which he had contrived called phenakistoscopes and zoopraxiscopes. There were various setups usind disks and drums, sometimes viewed via slits or mirrors and sometimes projected.

There is a permanent display of Muggeridge's machines at Kingston Museum and an exhibition running from 2010 to February 2011 was designed to show these machines plus a display of disks and, most importantly, a display of animal motion projected from copies of the original disks and shown on a screen fully six feet (180 cms) in diameter.

Edward Muggeridge was acquitted of the murder of a man he believed to be his wife's lover. This killing was carried out with a hand gun. Under U.S. law this was found to be justifiable homicide, a plea which would have received little sympathy in the U.K. Muggeridge also claimed insanity. He returned to Kingston Upon Thames and died at Liverpool Road, near Richmond Park.

Edward spent his early life in Kingston Upon Thames. John, his father, was described as a corn merchant. The family lived in the Townsend area. Later, married and setting up a family, he lived in Lambeth and appears to have given his occupation as a proprieter of mines.

His was an early cremation at Woking and his ashes were interred there.
