The son of Samuel & Elizabeth (Sheibley) Baker, in 1860 he was a carpenter and farmer living with and/or working for John & Barbara Baker. He stood 5' 9" tall and had light hair and blue eyes. He married Elizabeth Shull and fathered Carrie Cordelia (b. 11/09/63), Anna Elizabeth (b. 03/20/67), Margaret Ellen (b. 04/30/68), Mary Catherine (b. 03/21/70), Harry Van Kamp (b. 02/19/72), Jessie Dennison (b. 09/12/74), Mandy (b. @1875), Stella Maud (b. 11/04/77), Alice May (b. 07/24/80), Daisy Pearl (b. 09/08/81), and Frank Austin (b. 07/05/85).
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 29, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 30 as a private with Co. E, 208th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 1, 1865.
