Robert L. "Bert" Austin, 70, of Freedom, Okla., died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1993, of injuries from an automobile accident. Services are 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Hawks Funeral Home, Wellington. Burial will be in Council Hill Cemetery, Peck. Rev. Terry Buchanan of the Nazarene Church in Severy will officiate the services. Military honors will be conducted by V.F.W. Post 5475, Belle Plaine.
He was born April 12, 1920, in Burrton, to Miles Neil and Myrtle Mae (McMurray) Austin. He attended schools in Burrton, Leon, Texas and New Mexico before entering the U.S. Army where he served duringn WW II. He received four battle stars, the Good Conduct Medal, Sharp Shooters Medal and Purple Heart.
On Dec. 23, 1945 he and Margaret Eloise Jones were married in Wichita. He was a retired truck driver and had also lived in Towanda, Severy and Peck.
Survivors incloude: wife, Maragaret of Severy; sons, Jack of Manhattan, Charlie of Derby, Bobby of Chapman, Mark of Florence; daughters, Roberta Ebberts of El Dorado, Rebecca Bridges of Pine Bluff, Ark., Alice Harper of Lawrence; brothers, Neil of Independence, James of Towanda, Miles of Alamosa, Colo., Roger of Newkirk, Okla.; sisters, Josephine Smith of Hagley, Ariz., Harriet Tabor of Salina, Betty Joe Worthington of Eagle River, Alaska; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. Memorials are to the American Legion Avenue of Flags.
