Raymond Eldon Eells was born August 2, 1933, on the family farm between Rosston and Gate, Oklahoma, to Floyd Raymond and Lillian Maphet Eells. His only brother, Roger, was born 8 years later.
Ray began his schooling in Rosston, and graduated with the class of 1951. He enjoyed playing basketball and baseball with his class. He also played baseball with the town teams in the area. But he found the most enjoyment in life in hunting, fishing, and gardening.
He married his high school sweetheart, Rosalee Casey, in 1954, and took his bride to Homedale, Idaho, where he worked in a lumber mill. They moved back to Rosston, Oklahoma, in 1957. He was the only "local" employee hired when the new Sun Oil Company gas plant was built and opened in 1959. In 1964 he moved within the company to the production department and began pumping wells and later became the local field mechanic.
The disappearance of their son, Mark, in 1980 was almost unbearable. Many hours of searching and evenings of playing cards with parents passed the time until Mark's remains were finally discovered north of town by a hunter in 1983.
Upon his retirement in 1989, Papa could be seen with his youngest grandson, Rusty at his side. While he enjoyed time spent with all his grandkids and had a special touch with babies, Papa and Rusty had a special bond. Whether fishing, planting potatoes, or hunting they spent most days together during Rusty's childhood. Papa loved being outside, and gardening at the farm became a second occupation during the summer. He loved sharing his huge crops of potatoes, onions, and squash with the neighbors ... whether they wanted them or not! Papa was also well known around Laverne for his candy making ability and his cookies. Many years of UMYF ski trips were furnished with boxes of chocolate chip cookies, and many, many people enjoyed his plates of "turtles". He enjoyed cooking the hamburgers for the "block" parties and he was very comfortable in the kitchen.
Raymond is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd & Lillian Eells and his son, Mark Eells.
He is survived by his wife, Rosalee, of the home in Laverne; his daughters, Tammy & David Terry and Jan & David Love all of Laverne; 4 grandchildren and their spouses, Erin & Dan Prince of Rio Rancho, NM, Darin & Shannon Terry, Lori & Derek Carnagey, and Rusty & Hope McGuire, all of Laverne; and 8 great grandchildren: Kate and Lauren; Dakota, Makalyn, Holden, and Hallie; and Trex and Zadie; his brother, Roger Eells of Yukon; his brother-in-law, Tom and Shirley Casey of Rosston; nieces and nephews.
The family has suggested memorial gifts to the Laverne Cemetery, c/o Todd Cook, P.O. Box 686, Laverne, OK 73848 or the Laverne Fire Department, P.O. Box 1222, Laverne, OK 73848.
