April 29,1949 - Oct. 28, 2004
Steven Holmes made his journey home with the full moon shining brightly the morning of Oct. 28, 2004. Steve succumbed to liver cancer due to Hepatitis C. He was a very strong man and a wonderful and gentle human being. Steve died with close to 17 years of sobriety through the fellowship of AA and NA. Steve's commitment to recovery touched the lives of many, many people, and he always gave of himself to others what God gave to him. Steve is survived by his wife and soulmate, Leslie Cameron of Clearlake; son, Michael (Rachel) Holmes of Fremont; daughter, Cristen (Jon) Gunther of Cathedral City; and pride and joy granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Gunther; mother, Glenna (Tom) Masterson of Healdsburg; sister, Carolyn Lyden of Klamath Falls; sister, Diane Rose and family of Windsor; brother, Danny Tannenbaum and family of Antelope; aunt and uncle, Jim and Ginger Franklin of Fairfax; and extended family ‹ Sharon Cameron, Jack Cameron and family, and Neiche Buecker, all of Cathedral City; Paula Freeze of Banning; best friend for life Steve Hodge of Hallstead, Pa. We extend special thanks and gratitude to the following people who contributed to our family during Steve's illness: Naomi McKinnon, Hoyt Hopkins, Jim and Jeanie Gies, Joel Porter, Cathy Wordan, Swede Chalstrom, Frank Cozart, Paul Cutteridge, Gene Tidwell, Paul Slickter, George and Toni Fred, Barb Yudnich, Sabine McGowon and all our friends in Recovery from Santa Cruz, Fremont and Lake County. Special thanks to wife's employer Lake County Tribal Health, for allowing Leslie the extended time to be with her husband, and all our friends in the Native Community for prayers; Doug Harris of Yuba College for his kindnesses. Extra special thanks and gratitude to Diane Gunther, Steve's nurse with Hospice for her love and gentleness with Steve, and all of the Hospice staff. Thanks to Dr. Jack Clark and his staff and Dr. Susan Ruffner of Kaiser Santa Rosa, and to Jack and his kind staff at Lake Pharmacy.
Steve's message to all who knew him is, "The only way to get relief from ourselves and the troubles that come our way is to serve God by reaching out to others. Be of service with love in your heart." God bless everyone who got to know Steve.
There will not be any services. We will hold a celebration of Steve's life at a future date.
