She suffered from head injuries in a fall six weeks ago.
Arnott was 23 years old when she was chosen as a sky girl with Boeing Air Transport, the predecessor to United Airlines. Boeing decided to give the revolutionary idea of flight stewardesses a one-month no-pay trial.
The eight stewardesses, called "The Original Eight," studied an eight-page manual and took four hours of training in Cheyenne, Wyo., before their history-making flight May 15, 1930. After a successful month, Boeing hired the women at $110 a month. They were responsible for easing passengers' fears of flying, serving box lunches, tightening bolts that secured the wicker seats and making sure nobody threw cigarettes out of the unpressurized planes' windows.
