John's birthname was John Campbell and reportedly he got into some trouble in Glasgow as a youth. He and another schoolmate supposedly beat up a school teacher. John thought they had killed him and he fled to Northern Ireland and lived with a family named "McKeever" in County Antrim. John took their name and later met and married Margarette Anna Mullen in Ireland. John immigrated to USA on May 18, 1864 arriving in NYC on the S.S. Minnehaha. About one year later, John sent for his wife and four children to make the voyage. They first settled in Waukesha, WI and then traveled to Oak Grove Twp. in Pierce County, Wisconsin. They had nine children with this marriage. Margarette McKeever died in 1892 and John married Isabella McCaughey-Crawford in Pierce County, WI. John and Isabella McKeever had an additional nine children before Isabella passed away at their home in Prescott, WI on January 4th,1917. John, Margarette, and Isabella McKeever are all buried in Big River Cemetery, but no headstones have been located. The abandoned Big River Cemetery is very run down and overgrown and many headstones have been broken and many have sunk into the ground. A volunteer effort to cleanup the cemetery was made on April 24, 2004.
