Robert M. Akin, 59, of Jamul, and formerly of Longmeadow, Mass., a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, died on June 20 after the crash of his twin-engine plane near Brown Field in San Diego County.
He was a pilot for San-Lo Surveys.
Born in Springfield, Mass., he attended the Longmeadow schools, and was a graduate of the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, Conn.
He attended Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and received a bachelor of science degree from Oklahoma State University.
He was commissioned a Navy aviator in 1961. During the Vietnam War, he flew 235 combat missions, and received two Distinguished Flying Crosses, 18 Air Medals, and a Purple Heart.
After 20 years' service, he retired in 1978 with the rank of major.
He leaves his wife, Terri Akin; a son, Robert, stationed with the Navy at Kadena Naval Air Station in Okinawa; a daughter, Karen Erb of Pensacola, Fla.; his mother, Therese Akin of Longmeadow.
The funeral was on Thursday at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Chapel. A graveside service will be conducted Monday afternoon in Longmeadow Cemetery .
