He was born April 9, 1928 in Franklin County, Ind., the son of Bert and Nannie Rose Carpenter. He worked as a mechanic for the Indiana Department of Highways for 16 years.
On May 3, 1955, he married the former Beverly Baldus, and she survives; with four sons, Robert Carpenter Jr., Milroy, Ind., Kenny Carpenter, Greenwood, Ind., and Kevin and William Carpenter, both at home; two daughters, Eva and Christina Carpenter, both of Rushville, Ind.; one brother, Gary L. Creech, Newport, Ky., one sister, Mrs. Joel (Gail) Johnson, Newport, Ky.; and one grandson.
Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Moster and Cox Mortuary, Rushville, Ind.
Burial will be in the Fisher Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.
