Dale Atherton, 10 years old, who was severely burned by oil flames Monday at the noon hour at the home of his parents, two miles east of Adams, died in the hospital in Liberal Tuesday.
It was wash day at the Atherton farm. A kettle of water was heated in the yard & Mrs Atherton requested Dale to place more wood on the fire. Dale seized a can of waste oil and poured some of it on the fire. Instantly the flames shot out and enveloped his body. The boy dropped the can and ran. His mother hearing his cry ran to him and rolled him on the dirt, meanwhile removing his clothing.
Dale was in the fifth grade at the Eureka School, always making good grades and being on the honor roll. His life will ever be a source of inspiration to the entire family and to all who knew him. One brother and one sister preceded Dale in death.
Those of the immediate family who remain are the father and mother, one sister, Nina Mae, six brothers, Raymon, Norbert, Melvin, Medford, Wayne and Lee, one sister in law, Mrs Norbert Atherton, besides his grandfather and grandmother, Mr & Mrs C.E. Schultze.
Funeral services werre held at the Baptist Church in Adams conducted by Rev Earl L. Stark of Woodward assisted by Rev E. Ray Landsdown, District Missionarty, Rev R.D. Dodd of Goodwell and Rev J.W. Chapman of Guymon.
