Harvey Joe Spears, 75, passed away Friday, November 19, 2010 at the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born January 16, 1935 to Frank and Minnie (Brasher) Spears on Beaver Mountain, Haskell County, Oklahoma. He received his formal education at Mountain Home School and Keota High School. Joe enlisted in the United States Army and was called to duty September 21, 1954. He was trained in artillery warfare at Fort Bliss, TX. He was sent to Wiesbaden, Germany where he and his buddies helped build a massive bridge over the impressive Rhine River for large artillery and its escort. He was discharged at Fort Chaffee, AR in 1956. Joe retired form Shrivner Food Distributors in 1955 where he was employed for more than twenty-five years. Throughout those years he drove eighteen wheelers and also dispatched. After his retirement he was happy and content to spend time out-of-doors working in the yard, building planters and feeding birds and squirrels. He was so patient feeding the squirrels that one even bit his finger. Survivors include his previous wife, Faye (Johnson) Spears, their only child, Donna Spears Wylie and her husband Clark Wylie of Oklahoma City. Joe was the youngest of nine children. He is also survived by three brothers, Earl Spears and wife Melba of Del City, Sug Spears and wife Freda of Beaver Mountain and Kenneth Spears and wife Janice of Shawnee. He is preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Minnie Spears; Sisters, Tince Weathers, Ollie Norrid, Lorene McElroy; Brothers, Burl Spears and F.M. (Bat) Spears. Funeral services will be 1;00 p.m., Tuesday, November 23, 2010 in R.E. Shearwood Memorial Chapel with Pastor Ernest T. Harrison, Jr officiating. Pallbearers will be Frank Spears, Dennis Spears, Stanley Spears, Allen Johnson, Ronnie Johnson & Hugo Hernandez. Honorary Pallbearers include Danny Spears and Ed Norrid. Burial will follow at Beaver Mountain Cemetery under the direction of King & Shearwood Funeral Home of Stigler.
