George, as he was called, was the son of Sarah Ann Charlotte Murphy Foster and William McFadden Foster. He was about a year old when the family left St. Louis.

George survived through most of the terrible winter, but was left weak and ill. In February, the second Relief Party arrived in the encampment and found him in dire condition. By March, conditions in the encampment had rapidly deteriorated and George died one night when Louis Keseberg took him to bed with him. His distraught grandmother, Levinah Murphy, accused Keseberg of killing him. She died soon afterward. His parents survived the ordeal.
