José de los Dolores Ramón Saturniño Chapman y Ortega was baptized at Mission San Gabriel, Alta California, México, September 8, 1823 (age: 1 day; SG Baptism 07067). José moved with his parents to Santa Bárbara, where he married María Ignacia Figueroa y ... at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel October 5, 1846 (BP Marriage 00298). José became a U.S. citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. José remained a resident at Santa Bárbara until the late 1850's (1850 US Census). Sometime in the 1850's he relocated his family to San Buenaventura, were he remained until he died (1860, 1870, 1880 US Census).
José appeared as a widower in 1870 U.S. Census. José was buried in the Mission San Buenaventura Cemetery October 4, 1883 (Libro de los Disfuntos, Cemeterio de la Mision de San Buenaventura, No. 1693).
