FAIRFAX -- Bette Alice (Brewster) Bellows, age 77, passed away at her home with loving family by her side early Monday morning Sept. 10, 2001. Bette was born in Cambridge, Vt. on May 17, 1924 daughter of the late Buell A. and Marion (Newton) Brewster. She was a graduate of Cambridge High School, Class of 1942. She married the love of her life, Frederick G. Bellows, on June 7, 1947 in Cambridge. She was also a graduate of the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing. She loved her nursing career and often spoke of her operating room experiences as a Registered Nurse with the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington which she retired from in 1980. She was active in her community over the years, offering her nursing skills as a "Community Caregiver" to those in need in her own hometown area. She also enjoyed being a member of the BFA Club and Eastern Star Unity Chapter #17. Bette loved music and took great pleasure in her membership with the Champlain Echos. She was also a fan of Big Band music and so looked forward in her younger years to those special times spent with her husband dancing to the sounds of Sterling Weeds Orchestra playing all of their favorite dance songs. As a member of the United Church of Fairfax, she was active with the Ladies of the United Church and the United Church Choir. She always found time to participate in the Parkinson Support Group meetings in the St. Albans and Williston which greatly assisted her in battling her debilitating disease. Throughout her whole life, Bette remained a dedicated, respected, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many with always a kind word to say. Her keen sense of humor and genuine compassion for others will greatly be missed. Her passing will be a tremendous loss to all of those who had the distinct pleasure in their life to have known and loved her. Bette is survived by her loving husband, Frederick G. Bellows, of Fairfax; two sons, Dale Brewster of Fairfax and James Herbert and his wife Leslie of Puerto Rico; a daughter Patti Lynn Smith and her husband Michael of Fairfax; two sisters, Barbara Howard of Colchester and Lucy Brittain of California; seven grandchildren, Kelly, Kimberly, Kathi, Lauri, Nathan, Jessica, and Alison; two great grandchildren, Jared and Mara; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a daughter Cheryl Leigh Ellsworth in July of 1992.
Visiting hours will be held at the Hayes-Rich Funeral Home on Wednesday Sept. 12, 2001 from 2-4and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at the United Church of Fairfax on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001 at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the family lot in Binghamville Cemetery, Fletcher.
