He was born on September 18, 1971 in Ishpeming, MI, son of Martin Beck Sr. and Janice Magnant. Matthew graduated from Westwood High School in 1991. He was in the United States Marine Corps from 1991-94, during the Persian Gulf War. He worked as a security guard at the Ojibwa Casino from 1995-2000, and then for Celotex Corporation. He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church. Matthew loved football and all sports.
After his duty in the service he married Nanette Genschow on February 28, 1996 and built a family consisting of three children, Ashley, age 4, and Kassidey, age 2,and Matthew Jacob II, age 19 months, He was also survived by his father Martin Beck Sr. of Champion, three brothers Martin (Cara) Beck of Amasa, Mike Beck of Marquette, Mark Beck of Tampa, Florida, and a sister Marlene Beck of Baraga, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and a nephew.
Matthew was preceded by his mother Janice Magnant, and sister Mary Beck.
