MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Earl Edward Barney, 88, of Martinsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006, at Berkeley Springs Rehab and Nursing Home.

Born Sept. 17, 1917, in Berkeley County, W.Va., he was the son of the late Abijah Allen Barney and Anna M. Hiett Barney.

He graduated from Dry Run (W.Va.) School in 1932.

He retired after 35 years of service with the Berkeley County School Board, working as a bus driver, custodian and in maintenance.

He was a member of Butlers Chapel Church and Jones Springs Calvary Church.

He was a member of many associations, including Berkeley County and State of West Virginia Retiree Association, and was president of Cacapon Wildlife Association, having been a special forest fire warden for West Virginia. He was a member of Democrat Executive Committee, where he served as vice-chairman, was named Democrat of the Year in Morgan and Hampshire Counties, was a member of Berkeley County Democrat Women Club and Eastern Panhandle Shrine Club.

He is survived by his wife, Lyndell Nerine Albright Barney, whom he married Sept. 27, 1935; two children, Janet Kesecker of Berkeley Springs, and Donald E. Barney of Bradenton, Fla.; three sisters, Geneva Brown, Fay Soccino and Mary J. Tucker, all of Martinsburg; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by siblings, Mary J. Wilford, Abijah A., Virgie and Dorsey L. Barney.

Services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at South Berkeley Chapel, Inwood, W.Va. Pastor Dirk Hughes and Revs. Barbara Spies-Scott and Frank Douty will officiate. Masonic graveside rites will be held at Central Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends today from 6 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, Martinsburg, with an Order of Eastern Star service at 6 p.m.
