Rita M. Ahern, 85, beloved sister and aunt, died peacefully Thursday, (December 27, 2001), at the McLean Home in Simsbury after a long illness. She was the daughter of the late John P. and Catherine (O'Connell) Ahern.
Born on July 3, 1916 in New Haven. one of nine brothers and sisters. Rita was trained as a registered nurse. She served her country as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1942-1945.
After the war, she was employed as a private duty nurse, worked at the CT. Mental Health Center, Yale-New Haven Hospital and until retirement in 1985, as a school nurse at Southern Conn. State University.
Rita leaves her sister, Anne Ahern Koloski and brother, Vincent Ahern both of Branford and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was a guide and mentor to her entire family. Her wisdom and devotion will be sorely missed by them all. During the last three years of her life, she was cared for and deeply loved by her nieces, Kathryn Laschever of Simsbury and Nancy Jarvie of Avon and her nephew. Andrew Ahern of Branford.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Keegan and Katherine Ried and brothers, William. Daniel, Timothy and James Ahern.
The funeral will be held from the Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm St., West Haven Monday morning, 10:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. John Vianney Church. West Haven, 11 a.m. Friends may call Sunday, 3-5 p.m. Burial will be in St. Lawrence Cemetery, West Haven.
